Here is my process of mixing Illustrator Files with Photoshop and adding photo-material as well as brushing to it.

Your final Home Assignment ist to create a simple Illustration of your choosing (like this bird house) in Illustrator and then move over to Photoshop and work further on it by adding brush work and maybe some photos.
